Burial and Cremation Records
All records relating to burials within our 10 cemeteries, and cremation records are held by the Bereavement Services section at the Civic Centre, Gateshead.
Please note we do not hold records for burials in churchyards. You will need to contact the clergy/person in charge of the church for this information.
The local Catholic Father should be contacted in the case of records for Catholic/Roman Catholic burials.
Searching
We receive many requests to search burial records. Please help us by providing as much information as you can when making requests for searches. Identifying the date of death or within 5 years of the date of death is of great assistance to us when searching through our records. Our records are not computerised and the task can be very time consuming.
If you are unsure as to which cemetery you need us to search through it would be helpful if you could also give us the address of the deceased as in many cases they would be buried in the nearest cemetery to where they lived. For example:
"Anne Jackson, Smith Street, Gateshead. 77 years old. Died 1899."
Searching in person
You are more than welcome to visit our offices at the Civic Centre in Gateshead, to search through records. A small fee| is charged and this can be paid by cash, cheque or debit card. It is advisable to contact us by telephone or e-mail prior to your proposed visit to confirm that the books will be available. The records are only available for burials. Should you wish to check dates of cremations, staff within the Bereavement Services section will do this for you.
