Book of Remembrance

Both Birtley and Saltwell Crematorium have Books of Remembrance. Once entries have been seen in the Book of Remembrance, they can be accessed at any time, by using the ‘digital’ Book of Remembrance which sit along side the original books.

The digital book enables users to ‘see’ their inscriptions 365 day of the year. The digital book will never take the place of the original books of remembrance but does provide an extra service to facility users.

Leaflets showing the Books Of Remembrance are available on the right of the page and provide an example of the type of entries that can be placed in the book.

Information about the cost can be found on the Fees and Charges |page.

You can still have an entry into the book even if the cremation took place elsewhere. The Book of Remembrance information will usually be sent out to the applicant for cremation, (this is the person who made the arrangements for the cremation with the Funeral Director). A copy of the application form can also be downloaded from this web page along with some guidance notes to help you complete the form. PLEASE ENSURE you complete the application form for the right crematorium and have followed the guidance notes. Once an entry has been inscribed it cannot be removed.  It is important that entries are submitted within 4 months of date of death to ensure that they are shown for the first anniversary. If you have any queries about a Book of Remembrance entry please contact us.

Once you have completed the application form you can either;

  • Bring it into the Civic Centre where you can pay by cash, cheque or debit / credit card
  • Post the form along with a cheque or the completed debit / credit card details form (Please do not send cash in the post)

The Council reserve the right to vary any inscription as necessary or to refuse an entry which is considered unsuitable.

Now on line!

Please note that you can now view the above from the comfort of your own home!

Following the huge success of the digital book of remembrance at both Saltwell and Birtley crematoria, the Book of Remembrance can now be accessed on line via the following web sites:

Please Note: Your entry will not be able to be seen until the first anniversary of the death. The digital book is a copy of the original and until you have seen it in the actual Book of Remembrance you will not be able to see it on Digital, or on line.

You can apply to have an entry placed into the Books at any time but should you wish to see it on the first anniversary of the death you must not miss the cut off date given by the crematorium office. Unfortunately if you do, you will have to wait up to 2 years before it can be seen on any system.
