Parking spaces on the highway are often limited, especially in town and city centres or near popular attractions, so it is very important that the available spaces are effectively used.   It is also important that vehicles parking on the highway do so with consideration for other road users, and in particular that other vehicles can pass safely and without difficulty.

With a few exceptions, the law now allows the Council to issue Penalty Charge Notices to vehicles parked on the highway more than 50cm from the kerb. As with dropped kerbs there is no need for there to be any signs or lines on the road.
