Parking suspensions allow parking bays to be suspended if you need continuous access to a specified bay. The council must agree that it is necessary and this would normally be to carry out activitieswork such as:
- traffic movement and safety
- essential building/maintenance works
- utility works
- furniture removals
- special events
- weddings or funerals.
The suspension does not permanently remove the legal status of the parking place. It only removes it, or the designated part of it, from use during the suspension period. We consider all requests along with other factors including other work or events in the area. Our agreement to any suspension request cannot be assumed until it is given.
How much does it cost?
A non-refundable administration charge of £25.00 is payable on submission the application form. If authorisation is given a charge of £25.00 per bay (or equivalent space), per day, per suspension is charged. There is no discount for multiple days, weeks or months or for periods of less than a day.
Where the suspension of a bay or space is likely to result in loss of income to the council, there may also be an additional charge to cover that loss. If your application is approved, the charge must be paid before the suspension is implemented.
How to apply
Applications, together with the non-refundable administration fee, must be received at least ten working days before the start of the suspension period. This is to allow any site inspections to take place and to inform any interested parties. Once approved and the remaining fee is paid, we wiell produce the notices and place them at the site for the required period in advance of the suspension.
Apply for a suspension
You can pay by credit or debit card or in person at Gateshead Civic Centre by cash or cheque.
It is your responsibility as the applicant to cone/barrier off the suspended area during the suspension period.
Any vehicles parked within the suspended area during the suspended period will need to be agreed during the application process. We will issue permits for these vehicles to display.
Suspensions must only be implemented in the agreed location. Any parking permits issued as part of the suspension are only valid within the suspended area during the agreed dates.
Extending the suspension
If you need to extend a parking suspension which is already in force, you need to give us at least seven working days’ notice, together with reasons. This is to allow time for the request to be considered and for other affected parties to be given some notice of what is happening. Payment will need to made before the suspension can be extended
If notice is not received in time, your request will be refused and you will need to apply for a fresh suspension. The standard ten working days’ notice period stated above will then apply.
Cancellations and early terminations
No refund will be paid where a suspension is ended early. If in exceptional circumstances we do agree to a refund, we will charge a £10 administration fee.
