The Gateshead Sports Awards recognise and celebrate the achievements of the sporting community in Gateshead. 2010 is the first year of these awards and help support our status as European City of Sport 2010.

This year's awards were a great success and you can see a full list of the finalists and winners below.

Young Sports Volunteer
Awarded to a young person, aged 19 or under who has shown great levels of commitment and personal development through their involvement in sport as a volunteer over the past 12 months.

Step Into Sport ‘Gold Award’
Awarded to an individual who has achieved a minimum of 200 hours of volunteering within the Step into Sport programme.

The Maureen Chaplin Young Sports Achiever of the Year
Awarded to an individual aged between 11-19 yrs who has shown commitment, effort and/or achieved sporting success in their chosen discipline, club or organisation.

Awarded to an individual coach who has achieved success in their role, given up their time for the benefit of sport in Gateshead over the past 12 months or overcome adversity to develop in their coaching role.

Primary School of the Year
Awarded to the school that has made an exceptional contribution to PE and school sport over the year. The award recognises outstanding achievement in one specific area or the culmination of positive actions across a number of sporting strands eg Competition, Leadership & Volunteering, Out of School Hours Learning, Community Links etc.

Secondary School of the Year
