Active Access Home

Active Access provides Gateshead residents who are in receipt of selected benefits the opportunity to access Gateshead Council, Sport & Leisure facilities and activities at greatly reduced prices. Price reductions apply at anytime, on any day except bookable activities e.g. badminton, squash, football, which must be played before 4pm, Monday to Friday.

The benefits that qualify under the Active Access Scheme are:

  • Job Seekers Allowance (income based);
  • Income Support;
  • Severe Disablement Allowance;
  • Incapacity Benefit (long term rate only);
  • Carer's Allowance.

Family dependants* also qualify for the price reductions of the Active Access scheme.

*Not applicable if in receipt of a Carer's Allowance

What are the benefits of Active Access?

  • swim for only 80p at any of Gateshead Council's five swimming pools;
  • go to the gym at H20 Fitness at Dunston or Felling Swimming Pools, Choices Fitness at Gateshead Leisure Centre or Active Life at Gateshead International Stadium for 80p;
  • take a Sauna at Dunston Pool or Gateshead Leisure Centre for 80p;
  • approximately 50% off courses and fitness classes
  • approximately 50% off badminton, squash, indoor bowling and sports hall hire before 4pm, Monday – Friday or anytime at weekends, available to book 7 days in advance;
  • approximately 50% off the cost of school holiday children’s schemes.

Prices apply per person and some activities may need to be pre-booked e.g. swimming lessons.

How do I apply for Active Access?

Simply complete the application form|. Once verified please take it to your nearest Gateshead Council leisure facility where you will be provided with a Gateshead Active Card. A fee of £1.00 is payable per person. Active cards for Juniors are free.

How long is it valid?

Active Access is valid for 6 months and can be renewed upon confirmation that the eligible benefits are still being claimed.

How to use your Gateshead Active Access card?

Once you have your card, you must present it at reception each time you want to participate in an activity and pay the appropriate fee.

Conditions of Use

  • To receive Active Access benefits the Gateshead Active Card issued must be shown at time of use. If the card is not shown standard admission charges apply;
  • The card is not transferable and must be renewed every 6 months at a cost of £1.00 for persons 18 years and over;
  • The fee paid is not refundable;
  • Lost / damaged or stolen cards can be replaced at a charge of £1.00;
  • You must complete an induction where applicable for an activity / facility otherwise access will not be allowed;
  • Facilities and activities are subject to availability, session times and opening hours;
  • Gateshead Council reserves the right at its discretion to withdraw Active Access and an Active Card from any person(s) who misuses the card or who does not conform to these conditions of use;
  • Active Access holders are subject to the general establishment rules for all leisure facilities operated by Gateshead Council;
  • An Active Card may be left as a deposit for hired equipment. If equipment is lost or damaged through misuse the cardholder will be liable for replacement / repair costs;
  • Should an Active Access holder cancel a booking, 24 hours notice of cancellation will be required or the full fee may be charged;
  • Should the circumstances of the Active Access holder change making them no longer eligible for the benefits of the scheme, they must notify their nearest leisure facility and the benefits of the scheme will be withdrawn.
