1. What is Active Access?

Active Access provides Gateshead residents who are in receipt of selected benefits the opportunity to access Gateshead Council, Sport & Leisure facilities and activities at greatly reduced prices. Price reductions apply at anytime, on any day except bookable activities e.g. badminton, football, squash which must be played before 4pm, Monday - Friday.

2. How am I eligible for Active Access?

You must be a Gateshead resident in receipt of the following benefits:

  • Job seekers allowance (income based);
  • Income support;
  • Severe Disablement Allowance;
  • Incapacity Benefit (Long term rate only);
  • Carer's Allowance.

3. If my family want to come with me how much do they pay?

Family dependants* also qualify for the price reductions of the Active Access scheme.

* Note: Not applicable if in receipt of a Carers Allowance

4. How can I apply?

Complete the Active Access application form| that can be downloaded or you can pick up a leaflet from Gateshead Leisure facilities and libraries. Once complete and verified, bring the form to a Gateshead Council leisure facility. You will then be provided with a Gateshead Active Card.

5. How do my family dependants access the scheme?

Enter their names on the Active Access application form. They will then need to come along to a Gateshead Council leisure facility to obtain their Active Card as a photograph is needed to be taken.

6. How much does it cost?

£1.00 per person. Juniors are free.

7. How long is it valid?

Active Access is valid for 6 months and can be renewed upon confirmation that eligibility is still valid.

8. What is the difference between a Gateshead Active Card and Active Access?

The Gateshead Active Card is available to everyone and offers discounts for residents in Gateshead. The Active Access scheme is aimed at people on benefits as listed above.

Everyone receives a plastic swipe card ‘Gateshead Active Card’ on which individual discounts are applied to the card.

9. What are the benefits of Active Access?

  • swim for only 75p at any of Gateshead Council’s five swimming pools;
  • go to the gym at H20 Fitness at Dunston or Felling Swimming Pools, Choices Fitness at Gateshead Leisure Centre or Active Life at Gateshead International Stadium for 75p;
  • take a Sauna at Dunston Pool or Gateshead Leisure Centre for 75p;
  • approximately 50% off courses and fitness classes;
  • approximately 50% off badminton, squash, indoor bowling and sports hall hire before 4pm, Monday – Friday or anytime at weekends, available to book 7 days in advance;
  • approximately 50% off the cost of school holiday children’s schemes.

Prices apply per person and some activities may need to be pre-booked e.g. swimming lessons.

10. How do I to use my Gateshead Active card?

Once you have your card, you must present it at reception each time you want to participate in an activity and pay the appropriate fee. If you do not have your card with you will have to pay the standard price.

11. I need some help to get started?

If you have not taken part in any form of physical activity for a long time and need some support and encouragement, our Sport & Physical Activity Team can help you. For further information telephone 0191 433 6959 (Mon – Fri 9.00am – 5.00pm).

13. I need assistance when visiting a leisure centre. Are there any discounts available for my helper?

Persons requiring assistance to use of a leisure facility or activity may bring a companion / carer who will be admitted free of charge.

14. Can I book football / badminton / squash with my active Access card?

You can receive up to 50% off if you play before 4pm Monday - Friday or at a weekend and you can book 7 days in advance. When booking please quote your Gateshead Active Access card number.
