Sport and Physical Activity Development Home

Gateshead Council's Sport and Physical Activity Development Team provides active recreation opportunities and encourages local people to increase their levels of sport and fitness.

We offer services for school leavers, older people, people in the workplace and for those with health problems all over Gateshead.

We will answer your activity questions and help you choose and access suitable physical activities, which are delivered by our team of qualified health and fitness professionals.

Activities

Movers - Chair exercise classes, held in residential accommodation through out Gateshead. These sessions are accessible to none residents.

50+ - fun activity sessions, which includes gentle exercise and healthy eating advice with plenty of socialising. Suitable for all abilities.

Active Workforce – Need advice on how to get your workforce active? Join Gateshead’s Active Workforce programme.

Balance It Programme -  for children and teenagers, who are referred by a School Health Advisor or the Dietetics team because they are obese or at risk of being so. Using a multi disciplinary support team made up of School Health Advisor, Dietetics Service, Paediatrics, Child Psychology unit and Sport & Leisure devising activity plans for the whole family.

Goal Scheme -  a primary prevention GP referral programme, patients referred on to this programme by there ‘Goal Scheme’ GP practice having been identified as having risk factors which put them at risk of heart disease, type II diabetes and other illnesses in the future.

Cardiac Rehabilitation - Phase VI working in partnership with QE cardiac team to encouraging long-term exercise maintenance to those following a cardiac event. Helping them gain confidence and knowledge to be able to sustain long-term exercise aimed at reducing any further event.

Back to Fitness - caters for people with back problems and other related injuries. Referrals come via an Orthopaedic physiotherapist, following a course of physiotherapy.

Health Walks - supervised local walks supported by a walk leader offering an opportunity to improve your health and fitness and provides a chance to socialise giving you a distraction from everyday stresses.
