The Maze
Saltwell Park - The Maze
The £10 million pound make-over of Saltwell Park funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Gateshead Council was completed in 2005.

From mazes to monuments, fencing to footpaths, buildings to bandstands, this impressive Victorian park has undergone major changes to bring it back to its former glory.

We have PLANTED:

  • Trees that would have been used in Victorian time
  • Over 80,000 new plants in the shrubberies
  • Over 24,000 shrubs and herbaceous plants, 1000 rhododendron, azaleas and camellias
  • 1,600 box plants used to make new dwarf hedges
  • Created 3,600 square meters of new lawns 

We have RESTORED:

  • Saltwell Towers
  • The Maze - using 1,200 yew trees
  • The bandstand
  • The Almond Pavilion and Avenue Green Pavilion
  • The stable block complex and conversion to education centre
  • Monuments and sculptures
  • The Dene

We have REPAIRED:

  • Boundary walls, fences and gates
  • The lake edge and fencing
  • Buildings in South Dene Nursery
