2008 Nordic Festival: 21 November - 5th December

Dun coming through the trees
The sun coming through the trees

The region has a long history of cultural connections across the North Sea. With the 2008 Nordic Festival, Gateshead is proud to welcome singers, dancers, actors, artists and musicians from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden.

Throughout the Festival week we will host concerts and exhibitions, music for all ages and theatre for young people. With the combined talents of our five Nordic neighbours and our own regionally based artists, craft workers and performers, we will bring the Gateshead Quayside to life as we kick-start the winter festivities. We hope you will join us.

The Nordic Festival 2008 will begin with a traditional and close with the region's Finnish residents celebrating Finnish Independence Day, and we are all invited! There is nothing more evocative of the magical northern winters than a frost fair where stallholders sell their wares in the twilight hours of the day and shoppers can wander amongst the inviting delights, hunting for those unique gifts for someone special. While you browse join the revellers singing, playing and dancing to live music and watch street-entertainers tell their unusual tales.
