On the Outside Festival

‘On the Outside’ is a unique event organised completely differently from all other jazz festivals. Jazz North East invite 15 of the finest musicians from the world of free improvisation from the USA, mainland Europe and the UK to come to Tyneside for three days, and to work together without rehearsal or premeditation of any kind.

This has been described as ‘high-wire music’ without a
safety net’, and requires players of vast experience and ability.

This kind of event is by nature unpredictable. It might work like magic, it might sound like chaos, it might end in helpless laughter and still work brilliantly.

It frequently proves to be an unrepeatable experience of genius in action.
