Windy Nook Nature Reserve is a large open space with spectacular panoramic views of Tyneside's economic heartland and the east coast beyond. The smaller area near the Methodist Chapel is known as Windy Nook Nature Park and is designated as a Local Nature Reserve. The Nature Park supports a remnant of acid heath grassland, scrub habitat and a spring fed wetland.
In recent years a large amount of works have been carried out to improve the wider Windy Nook site including installing fencing to prevent unauthorized motor bike access, creating and improving paths and nature conservation operations across the site such as woodland thinning.
New Green Gym and Physical Activity Sessions at Windy Nook
Two new outdoor green gyms have been installed in Gateshead Council’s Saltwell Park and at Windy Nook Nature Reserve. Both have 10 pieces of fitness equipment able to accommodate up to 42 people at a time, including airwalkers, leg presses, bikes, steppers and more. They can be used by anyone aged 14 and over for free.
To help local residents and people using the parks understand how to get the most out of the new green gyms informal activity sessions have been set up at both sites, with a member of the Gateshead Council sport & physical activity team on hand to give advice and pointers. Weekly bootcamp sessions have also been set up if you’re looking for a challenge.
Sessions are being held on Thurdays between 9.15 - 10.15 am meeting at the back of Windy Nook Primary School.
