Why not rediscover your rural roots and entertain the children at the same time, with a visit to a Gateshead farm with a difference.
Bill Quay Community Farm, tucked away in the east of Gateshead, on the banks of the River Tyne, is a rural haven home to a variety of livestock Old MacDonald would be proud of!
Managed by Gateshead Council and a community management association, the farm was set-up in the mid-1980s to educate and entertain the local community. It is a little jewel in an urban area.
Animals
The farm has developed into a rare breeds centre with animals including cows, goats, pigs, sheep, chickens and rabbits.
Indeed, Ruby the Tamworth pig - one of only 200 of her kind in the world - scooped a top award at the prestigious Royal Show 2005. She was crowned the champion female at the show, winning Gold in the Gilt Class for her breed and the top prize when entered against all age groups.
Art Trail
The farm is host to an amazing new art trail. Created by local artists, the trail is made up of 25 exhibits all with a farm life theme, as well as a special piece created by local children during the summer holidays.

Green Fleece Cafe
If all the artwork and animals tires you out, you can relax in the farm's very own café.
The Green Fleece Café is open 10am - 2pm weekdays, 12noon - 4pm weekends, and 10am - 4pm during school holidays, offering a hearty selection of snacks and drinks.
