Bridge lights up the sky

Gateshead Council has commissioned a spectacular new lightshow to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the opening of the Gateshead Millennium Bridge.

Vibrant colours, rainbows, stripes and swirls will all be featured in a new lightshow which uses the bridge’s own lighting system to turn the bridge’s lofty arch into a streak of ever-changing colour across the night sky.

The bridge is illuminated using a sophisticated computer-controlled lighting system that operates via eight high-powered light cannons located below the arch on either side of the river.

The new light show will begin on Thursday 15 September at around 8.00pm and will run until about 12.30am. The lightshow will then be repeated on Friday night and right over the week-end.

The lightshow can be viewed from all around the Quayside and Gateshead Quays.

Do you share your birthday with the bridge?

Gateshead Millennium Bridge - constructionWill your child be celebrating their 10th birthday on 17 September this year? If so, we want them to help us to celebrate the bridge’s own tenth birthday.

We are inviting every child living on Tyneside and celebrating their tenth birthday on 17th September to join us for a special birthday photograph on the Gateshead Millennium Bridge on the morning of Friday 16th September. After that, they will be able to climb aboard one of a flotilla of vessels which will travel beneath the Bridge, as well as helping us to cut – and eat - a special Millennium Bridge birthday cake!

If your child was born on 17th September 2001, then contact Sam Reed on (0191) 433 2018 or email samreed@gateshead.gov.uk| to secure a place on their exclusive event.

Daily tilts

Gateshead Millennium BridgeGateshead Millennium Bridge will be continuing its regular daily lunchtime tilts until Friday 30 September. The tilt will begin at around 12pm and will last about 10-15 minutes.

The bridge can be viewed from either side of the river – though one of the best views is from South Shore Road above Baltic Square on the Gateshead side.

Due to certain restrictions and essential maintenance work, there may be times when the lunchtime tilt can not go ahead.
