Central Library Update
Historic entrance re-opens.
The £2.6m transformation of Gateshead Central Library took another step forward this month with the re-opening of the historic front entrance for the first time in over 30 years.
The entrance dates back to the opening of the Library in 1926 but was closed in the 1970s when the building was extended.
When the Library asked local people how the building could be improved, many members of the public expressed the desire to see the original 1920s entrance reopened.
Principal Library Manager Stephen Walters said ‘Opening the historic entrance will help bring back to life the historic front of the building and show that something is happening inside. The entrance is more central and is more accessible to people on foot and alighting from local bus stops.’
What’s next?
The entrance marks the end of the first phase of works to extend and improve Central Library. Together with funding from the Council, a £2m grant from the Big Lottery Fund will provide a new children’s library, new space for community groups, a new café and improved learning facilities.
The second phase of the work is now underway to construct a new café, gallery and community rooms. The Library will remain open during the works but the café is temporarily closed whilst work is carried out.
The improved Library will open in Winter 2010.
Please note that parking will be limited at the Library during the works. For more information please phone ahead 0191 433 8400.
