To celebrate the fifth anniversary of the opening of BALTIC, we have gone back through our photographic archive to show you how the former redundant flour mill was transformed into Britain's newest and most stunning contemporary art gallery.
We also spoke to John Devlin, one of the team responsible for the complex task of bringing the BALTIC back to life, on the eve of his retirement as Director of Development and Enterprise for Gateshead Council. He recounted some the difficulties which the builders, engineers and designers had to overcome to complete its transformation.
So here, in sound and vision, is the fascinating story of how BALTIC, a derelict hulk, became a design icon.
