Production Lines

What was made from the wheat?

  • FINISHED FLOUR made by grinding and sieving the endosperm - the starchy interior core of the wheat grain. It is the main ingredient of bread, cakes, pastry and biscuits. The flour was bleached to make it white and chalk was added for protein and to prevent rickets. Powdered vitamins were also added.
  • BRAN the skin of the wheat grain.
  • WHEATINGS the finely broken skin of the grain.
  • ANIMAL FEED was also made at the Baltic, in a special part of the factory known as the Blue Cross Mill. Grain was mixed with other ingredients to produce a coarse food for cattle and other farm animals.
