  • Why does Gateshead Council go to Chelsea?
Chelsea Flower Show is nationally recognised as a prestigious event, visited by thousands of UK residents and covered by worldwide media.  It features heavily in the news every year and presence there promotes Gateshead our key regeneration work on a massive scale.  This kind of attention to our area plays an important role in attracting business, investment and visitors, which all build on our economy making this a better place to live.
  • What will happen to Gateshead's entry after the competition?
The garden will be recreated three times for local people to see it.  Firstly at the Gateshead Summer Flower Show, then on Gateshead Quayside during the Great North Run Weekend.  Then after that it is planned to be installed permanently in the local community, we are still deciding where.
  • What's the best time of year to plant runner beans?
Runner beans are an ideal plant for the beginner gardener.  They are a perennial plant, but in the UK they are grown half-hardy annual.  You should prepare the soil for your runner beans in February or March and plant them a week before the last frost!
  • What species of flowers will be used in this years Chelsea Garden
Our garden will be planted with wild flowers, bluebells, miniature narcissi, muscari scilla, campion, foxgloves and fritillaria, primulas and periwinkle to symbolise the biodiversity experienced on woodland walks.  Over The Tyne Bridge we will plant multi coloured violas evoking the colourful image of the runners in the Great North Run.
