Two subways in the centre of Gateshead were redesigned and restored using digital images of local people printed on ceramic tiles. The Blue Subway, Hopper Street and The Orpheus Subway in Barns Close incorporated surface treatments and sequenced lighting to enhance the design. During the planning stages of the project the artist worked with local people, who featured as characters in the final designs.
The work was the result of collaborations between the artist and engineers in the Highways and Construction Section, Gateshead Council.
Funded by One North East through the Single Regeneration Budget.
