Happy Hearts Lantern Festival

Happy Hearts Lantern Festival

This is an annual celebratory parade in Wrekenton and Springwell Estates. The event started in 1991 as part of the Arts in Health Programme. The project involves the whole community but is based around a local promary school.

Workshops for this project have included:

  • making fruit sculptures;
  • baking bread;
  • creating lanterns.

The centrepiece for the procession is a giant heart of the community which is carried through the streets. The Lantern Festival encourages people to take pride in their comunity, share skills and learn about improving their health.

Lord Lawson Comprehensive & Kenton School Arts Week

This project involves two Comprehensive schools - one from Gateshead and one from Newcastle - working together on a joint arts week. The project involved both schools working together on:

  • projects with artists;
  • devising dance and music pieces;
  • and included visits to cultural venues.

Arts Week culminated in a celebration event on Baltic Square.

Gateshead Family Sculpture Day|

This is an annual event in Saltwell Park for people to try their hand at sculpture. 2005 was the events 20th Anniversary.

Sunburst|

This is a programme of activities in a Big Top in Saltwell Park. Three resident companies led music, dance, circus skills, theatre and drama workshops and events. Schools and Early Years practitioners worked with Northern Stage on workshops to feed into their Golden Bird Christmas show to be performed at Gateshead's Caedmon Hall.

Scott Henshall Fashion Show

Scott Henshall Fashion Week

Scott Henshall, a leading designer from the region worked with A level students from schools in Newcastle and Gateshead.

  • Students designed and made their own outfits and also had a visit to see Scott;s collection as part of London Fashion Week;
  • The pupils then modelled their own work inspired by the region at a Fashion Show in Leazes Park, Newcastle;
  • Pupils from eight Primary Schools also got involved in designing a T-Shirt inspired by the region;
  • Two winners from each scholl were selected to have their designs made up. The winning designs were then modelled by the children and celebrities at the Fashion Show in Leazes Park, Newcastle.
