Leviathan

Tall Ships_250x199
Tall Ship Races' 2005

This programme of more than 30 community events was developed to celebrate and support the visit of the Tall Ships Races' 2005.

The project brought together local artists, voluntary groups, amateur organisations and schools in activities and events centred on the sea and Gateshead's rich maritime heritage.

Sea Monster
Pupils from Emmaville Primary School put the finishing touches to their sea monster.

A mythical sea monster, Leviathan was the name of a ship at the Battle of Trafalgar captained by Commander Trotter. 2005 marked the bi-centenary anniversary of the battle.

Artist Jane Gower and Pete Shaw from art organisation Makers and Shakers helped Gateshead school children make their own sea monsters, mermaids and seahorses as part of their welcome for the Tall Ships' crews when they sailed into the region.
