Gateshead's Urban Design Reference Group is a team of residents who have gained professional knowledge about what it takes to make great neighbourhoods.

Over 50 residents took part in the Gateshead Urban Design Training Course to learn more about creating great urban places to live.

The group worked with Planning Aid North (PAN) and the council on several workshops and tours of the region's best examples of good urban design.

This included thinking about:

  • Neighbourhood layout
  • Parking and road design
  • Building design
  • Open space and environmental issues
  • Urban character

The training also received a commendation from the Royal Town Planning Institute's (RTPI) North East Regional Award for Planning Achievement in 2008.

The team is now using its expert knowledge to work on masterplans for their areas, and is helping the council identify prospective partners and designers who can deliver the plans for Gateshead's future.
