Disabled Facilities Grant

Disabled Grants
Disabled Facilities Grant

A mandatory Disabled Facilities Grant of up to £30,000 is available to provide suitable adaptations for owner-occupiers and tenants to enable them to stay in their homes and improve living conditions. The grant is means tested unless for a disabled child.

The grant is available to owners and tenants and covers any reasonable costs in excess of the disabled person’s assessed contribution.

Grants are made for adaptations that will provide you with better freedom of movement into, out of and around your home and to access essential facilities within it.

The type of works can include the following:

  • widening doors and installing ramps to make it easier to get into and out of your home;
  • providing or improving access to your living room or bedroom by installing a stair lift;
  • installing a downstairs bathroom to provide suitable toilet, washbasin, and bath or shower facilities;
  • fitting accessible kitchen equipment to make the preparation and cooking of food easier for someone with a disability;
  • improving or providing a heating system in your home which is suitable to the needs of a disabled person - for example, by replacing solid fuel heating with gas or electric heating;
  • adapting heating controls to make them easier to use;
  • ensuring the safety of a disabled person and other occupants.

When you apply for a Disabled Facilities Grant, we will need to be satisfied that the proposed works are:

necessary and appropriate to meet the disabled person’s needs. One of our Occupational Therapists, in consultation, will carry out an assessment to help decide what is necessary and appropriate,
and
reasonable and practicable depending upon the age and condition of the property.
