Appraisal of the Housing, renewal and Sustainability needs Of rural areas of Gateshead

Gateshead Council commissioned a Rural Sustainability Study during 2006 which was undertaken by the University of Northumbria and Banks of the Wear. The research aims to develop proposals and options for intervention that will support the long term sustainability of rural communities.

The studies comprise a large sample survey of residents with particular emphasis upon hard to reach groups together with a review of existing information drawn from a variety of sources.

The research is needed to support the Council’s strategic planning and in particular to help deliver the Housing Strategy, the Housing Strategy for Older People and support compilation of a Rural Housing Strategy during 2007. The information will play a key role in informing the Unitary Development Plan, the Community Strategy, the Private Sector Housing Renewal Policy and the Neighbourhood Renewal Strategy.
