Homes suitable for occupation by the elderly
Your landlord may refuse to let you buy on the ground that your home is a single property (i.e. not a property which is one of a group) and it is particularly suitable, under paragraph 11 of Schedule 5 to the Housing Act 1985, for occupation by elderly people (i.e. persons aged 60 or more). If so, you can ask a Residential Property Tribunal to decide if your landlord is right but you must ask them within 56 days after the landlord has refused to sell your home. If your Right To Buy application is denied for any other reason (i.e. one other than under paragraph 11 of Schedule 5 to the Housing Act 1985) you can only take action through the county court.
