Every year the council has to commit valuable resources to clearing-up and disposing of litter across Gateshead, despite having hundreds of permanent litter bins across the borough.
We're keen to engage with local residents and create more responsible neighbourhoods, so that residents feel empowered to make their own community better. We want residents to take responsibility for their own neighbourhood by helping us tackle litter - after all its your Gateshead.
Littering is a crime and council staff are now issuing £50 fixed penalty notices to people caught deliberately spoiling the streets by not using litter bins.
Figures show that food litter nationally blights almost a quarter of streets. We have joined forces with environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy to tackle the most prolific groups of litter droppers that is the 16-25 age groups.
