We do all we can to ensure grassed and planted areas are kept neat and tidy for the enjoyment of residents and to benefit our wildlife. However, recent cuts in funding from central government mean that many of the services we deliver have had to change in order to make savings.
We have reduced the frequency of grass cutting across Gateshead. Cutting during summer now takes place once every three weeks instead of every two weeks. Some large open grassland areas that are not formally used for sport or leisure, will only be regularly cut along the edges of footpaths and roads.
We maintain floral displays in important public locations like Saltwell Crematorium. But, many other flower beds have had to be seeded with grass as we are no longer able to maintain them. We would welcome enquiries from residents and community groups who feel that they would like to look after planting in areas where we will no longer be able to continue.
If you have any further enquiries or would like to know more about opportunities for your community to become more involved in planting, call us on 0191 433 7000 or complete our online enquiry form.
