Contaminated Land Strategy

A new regime for the identification and remediation of contaminated land, came into force on 1 April 2000.

The purpose of the regime is to deal with the legacy of past contamination. The Government’s objectives are:

  • to identify and remove unacceptable risks to human health and the wider environment;
  • to seek to bring damaged land back into beneficial use;
  • to ensure the cost burdens faced by individuals, companies and society as a whole are proportionate, manageable and economically.
