Home composting

Compost BinComposting is an inexpensive, natural process that transforms your kitchen and garden waste into a valuable and nutrient rich food for your garden. It's easy to make and use.

A home composter is for uncooked vegetable kitchen waste and garden waste - almost 30% of your household waste can be composted. It produces compost you can use in your garden.

Composting is easy and there are plenty of benefits:

  • Helps your garden grow
  • Reduces pollution
  • Reduces waste taken to landfill
  • Saves you money

What can go in your compost bin

Brown (dry) materials

  • Egg shells (crushed) and egg boxes
  • Cardboard (such as corrugated cardboard packaging, cereal boxes, toilet and kitchen roll tubes)
  • Scrunched up newspaper and shredded paper
  • Hedge trimmings, dry leaves and twigs
  • Garden prunings
  • Sawdust and wood shavings
  • Cotton threads and string
  • Straw and hay
  • Ashes from wood, paper or lumpwood charcoal

Green (moist) materials

  • Tea bags and leaves
  • Coffee grounds and coffee filter papers
  • Flowers, plants and weeds
  • Fruit and vegetable peelings
  • Grass cuttings
  • Pond algae and seaweed

It’s good to try and put at least as much brown (dry) material into you compost bin as green (moist) material.

Tips and tricks

  • Make sure you turn your compost regularly to ensure that there is enough air in the mixture and try to put at least as much brown (dry) material into you compost bin as green (moist) material.
  • Put your composter in a sunny spot – the plastic will absorb the suns UV rays and heat up the compost.
  • Get yourself a kitchen caddy to collect scraps – it saves time and effort of having to nip out to the compost bin every time you prepare a meal!
