Blue bin for household recyclingYour blue bin makes it easier to recycle a wide range of items at home including cardboard and plastic bottles.  It has an inner box to keep all paper-based items separated.

It is collected every fortnight, on the same day as your household waste.

You can find out which day your recycling will be collected by using the online bin checker| or calling 0191 433 7000.

What can I recycle?

In the inner box

  • Newspapers & magazines
  • paper 
  • telephone directories
  • white envelopes
  • catalogues
 

In the main part of the recycling bin

  • Flattened Cardboard
  • All white, grey and brown cardboard
    Cereal boxes, brown envelopes, toothpaste boxes and clean ready meal boxes etc.
    Remember... flatten cardboard before putting it in your recycling bin. 
 
  • Empty food tins, drink cans and aerosols

    Aerosols, baby milk formula tins and biscuit tins etc.
    Remember... rinse all cans and tins before putting them in your recycling bin.
 
  • Plastic bottles

    All plastic bottles can be recycled; rinse your bottles, squash them and remove the lids (the lids cannot be recycled)

    Jam jars, coffee jars, wine bottles, baby food jars etc.
    Remember... remove lids and rinse your glass bottles
PLEASE DO NOT PLACE MATERIALS IN PLASTIC BAGS.  THIS CONTAMINATES THE LOAD.
 

What should I not put in the recycling bin?

At present we are unable to take the items listed below in your blue bin. However, some of the items can be recycled at other locations in Gateshead|.

Please only put the correct items in your recycling bin to prevent contaminating the load. Contaminated loads will have to go to the landfill rather than for recycling.
