Waste & Recycling Centres
Gateshead Council actively encourages the recycling of household waste through the provision of two Waste and Recycling Centres (Campground, Wrekenton and Cowen Road, Blaydon).
Both centres are open to the public seven days per week, all year round except for Christmas Day. The opening times are:
Winter (1st October - 31st March)
-
Monday to Friday, 8am - 5pm · Saturday and Sunday, 8am - 6pm
Summer (1st April - 30th September)
-
Monday to Sunday, 8am to 8pm
Cowen Road not only accepts the more commonly known recyclable goods such as paper, glass, plastic bottles and mixed cans but a more diverse range of products such as old engine oil, cardboard, D.I.Y. rubble, white goods (eg unwanted washing machines and refrigerators/freezers), Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (eg TVs, flourescent tubes, computers and monitors), LPG bottles, and used batteries.
Campground accepts all of the above, as well as textiles. The facilities are free and there are attendants available to provide help if necessary.
These facilities are not available for the receipt of trade waste. If you use a van, pick-up or tow a trailer, you need a permit to deposit waste at any of Gateshead’s Waste and Recycling Centres. For further information please visit our Permits| page.
In addition, facilities are provided each year to convert Christmas trees into chippings which can be used as a mulch in local parks and gardens and woodlands.
