Pest Control

The Council provides a control service for a range of public health pests including rats, house mice, cockroaches, bedbugs and fleas. A service is also provided to control certain nuisance pests such as wasps and a range of beetles and insects.

Our service standard is to contact you within two working days of your request being received.

There is a charge for the pest control service except for the control of rats in privately owned homes.

Gateshead Housing Company tenants receive a free service (GHC as landlord takes the charge).

Persons in receipt of the state pension AND a recognised benefit receive a free service. Please note that proof of entitlement to one of the following recognised benefits must be made to qualify for a free treatment:

  • Pension Credit;
  • Income Support;
  • Housing Benefit;
  • Council Tax Benefit;
  • Disabled Persons Tax Credit.

If you have a pest control emergency, then you can contact the Council Emergency Telephone Information Service (ETIS Care Call) and they will contact the Pest Control Officer. Out of hours, the Pest Control Officers offer a voluntary service for emergencies and will help if they can. A pest control emergency is classed as:

  • Rats in a habitable room of a house;
  • A wasp nest in a house or preventing the only access to a house;
  • A swarm of honey bees in a house.
