Gateshead has a range of educational provision for children who have special educational needs.
Mainstream Schools
The majority of children with special educational needs attend mainstream schools and receive help through the school's own special educational needs resources.
Additionally, there are 8 mainstream Primary Schools which are Additionally Resourced Mainstream Schools (ARMS). Each ARMS specialises in a particular area of learning need. The ARM Schools are as follows;

Pupils with Statements of Special Educational Needs
Pupils with Statements of Special Educational Needs receive help through the school's own resources and through additional support provided by the Local Authority (LA). The LA provides support to schools to assist them to meet the special educational needs of their pupils through its Special Educational Needs Support Service, Educational Psychological Service, Behaviour Support Service, Inspectors, Advisors and Consultants. There is also a Learning Support Service that provides services to primary, junior and infant schools on a 'buy back' basis.
There are a number of special schools as well as centres and bases attached to mainstream schools that cater for a wide range of children's special educational needs. All special schools support integration into mainstream schools.
The Local Authority is responsible for deciding upon provision and placement for all pupils with Statements of Special Educational Needs (SEN), following appropriate consultation with parents and schools.
