Gateshead has 77 primary schools, 10 secondary schools and 6 special schools.

In 2005, Gateshead Council’s schools did dramatically better than schools across the rest of the country, with more than six in ten of the borough’s youngsters gaining at least five higher graded GCSEs today (25 August).

This is the eighth year Gateshead’s GCSE figures have improved, increasing on average by 3% year-on-year. Over the last five years alone 20% more 16 year-olds have achieved 5 A* - C.

64.9 per cent of pupils gaining grades of A* to C in five or more GCSEs, is up almost 2.7 per cent compared to last year’s results.

The increase is seen by Gateshead Council as further proof of its continual efforts to provide the best education that it can for thousands of young people.

There are five specialist schools across the borough offering specialised support to young people in subjects including sports, art, languages and technology.
