Secondary Review - East Gateshead
We want YOUR views to help us design the best possible secondary education system for East Gateshead.
We have recently developed, in consultation with local people and partners, an ambitious and inspiring sustainable communities strategy called Vision 2030. This sets out what we all want Gateshead to look like in the years to come which is:
"Local people realising their full potential enjoying the best quality of life in a healthy, equal, safe, prosperous and sustainable Gateshead."
This is supported by our vision for children and young people, as set out in the Children and Young People's Plan, which is for them to be:
"Empowered and supported to develop to their full potential and have the life skills and opportunities to play an active part in society".
This is a chance to design a secondary education system to support the delivery of these objectives in East Gateshead.
In Gateshead we have already achieved high standards in our secondary schools, so that our young people receive the best education we can provide for them. We want to build on this position of strength and we have a "once in a lifetime" opportunity to re-design provision in East Gateshead to deliver our vision for secondary education in the 21st Century. We can do this with substantial government funding (£30 million) from the Building Schools for the Future (BSF ) programme. It is vital that we engage the whole community in a discussion about the vision of what East Gateshead needs for the future, so that we can use the available funding in the best way possible.
We have developed some principles to guide this review. We need to ensure that there is sufficient high quality educational provision accessible to
secondary aged students which matches demand and meets the needs of the community. It is also important that all schools are able to build on successful
partnerships both with each other and with other providers for the benefit of students in order to deliver a broader choice of subjects, particularly for students aged 14-19. Schools must be inclusive so there is a place for every student in the local community regardless of any additional need. Finally it is
vital that schools are educationally and financially viable.
To help ensure that the Council receives a fair and balanced picture of everyone's views, an independent external research agency (QA Research) is guiding the review process and will analyse your responses. Their analysis and recommendations will be reported to the Council's Cabinet, and will be available to the public.
