Free School Meals

How can my children receive school meals?

Children attending local education authority schools are entitled to free school meals if:

  • You are on Income Support / Job Seekers Allowance (Income Based JSA - IB) / Guarantee Pension Credit; or
  • You are in receipt of Child Tax Credit (but not Working Tax Credit) and your income is less than £13,910.00 per year

The following benefits do not entitle you to free school meals:

  • Contribution-based Jobseekers Allowance
  • Working Tax Credit
  • Foster Allowance
  • Council Tax Benefits
  • Incapacity Benefit

If you think you may be entitled to a free meals for your child, please ring 0191 433 3729.

Parents can be sure that pupils who receive a free school meal are not singled out in any way.

Important – if you stop receiving Income Support or JSA (IB); you stop being responsible for the child/children concerned; or your Tax Credit entitlement changes, you MUST inform the Council Benefit Section immediately.
