Our School Meals Strategy

Starting school, whether at primary school level, or going up to secondary school brings a lot of new challenges for our children. Queuing, choosing food, collecting cutlery and carrying a tray are all new experiences for most reception children. Starting secondary school, with cards to pay for meals and a cash cafeteria to choose from, present more new experiences, together with a chance to learn.

Children’s diets come in for a lot of criticism and concern these days. With rising obesity levels together with less active lifestyles, nearly a third of children are overweight and this figure is expected to rise. One response to this has been the introduction of new nutritional standards for school meals.

Eating a balanced meal at lunchtime in the company of other children is fundamental to what we believe: that a school meal is an integral part of the school day.

Gateshead School Meals aspire to provide the highest quality of provision which is a hot meal cooked on site from fresh and seasonal ingredients.
