Sustainable Modes of School Travel Strategy
The new Education and Inspections Act, which came into force in April 2007, placed a general duty on Local Authorities to promote the use of sustainable travel and transport for the school journey. One of the elements of the duty is to publish a Sustainable Modes of School Travel Strategy by the 31st of August 2007. Gateshead Council has allocated resources to school travel planning since 1999. The School Travel Plan Programme has flourished in the past few years, with over half of Gateshead Schools successfully developing their own Travel Plan. Further resources have been directed towards traffic engineering measures to help facilitate sustainable travel to school. The Sustainable Modes of School Travel Strategy details the current infrastructure which supports sustainable school travel, and ways in which barriers will be tackled. In this way, it sets out how valuable achievements to date will be built upon in the future.
