My child is being bullied, what can I do?

All schools have an anti-bullying policy that states how they deal with incidents of bullying. As a parent/carer you can request to see this policy, to help you understand the school procedures.

If your child is in primary school then the first person to speak to is your child’s class teacher. Explain your concerns and ask if they have noticed anything in the classroom or playground.

In secondary schools the first person to speak is your child’s head of year or head of house.

Ask the school for suggestions about how to deal with the bullying and support your child. There are many ways a school can monitor and help to deal with the problem.

If you are not happy with the first response then you should ask to speak with the Head Teacher.

You should not keep your child off school. If your child has said they are being bullied and is unhappy it is hard to send them to school. However keeping them off because of the bullying is not a valid reason for your child to be absent from school.
