Will I be fined or taken to prison?

Failure to ensure your child’s regular school attendance may result in:

  • £50 Fixed penalty fine, which increases to £100 if the fine is not paid within 28 days;
  • Parenting order (this means you will given parenting classes to attend);
  • Prosecution in the Magistrates Court with a maximum of £2500 per parent.

Whilst it is very rare that parents/carers are put into prison for failing to ensure their child attends school, this might be the only option left to the Magistrates in certain circumstances.
