Education Welfare Officer

What is an Education Welfare Officer, and what do they do?

  • Some people think they just look at attendance for young people and get on their back if the young person misses a few days of school, college or home tuition (however they may get educated);
  • In fact they do a lot more, by working with schools, other agencies and organisations and most importantly the young person, to try and find out of the young person needs and help and support with anything to do with their learning;
  • They also help by talking to people and going to meetings. For example, if you have a problem in your learning environment such as being bullied in school and it is really horrible for you, the EWO would talk with people at the school to try and find a way to make things normal and to make sure it does not happen again. Or if you needed extra help with a subject the EWO would try and get you all the things you needed to help you with it;
  • I do hope this tells you a bit about what an Education Welfare Officer does for you young people but if you would like to know more feel free to contact us about anything.
