Family Learning Activities
In 2007 – 2008 Family Learning through Gateshead Council will be offering a wide range of FREE programmes including:
Workshops (2 – 4 hrs)
Suitable for parents with children aged 0 – 16

Delivered as a one-off activity or as an introduction to a longer programme

Workshops provide an opportunity for parents to be engaged with their children on a range of exciting and innovative activities
Keeping up with the children (9 – 13 hrs)
Suitable for parents with children aged 4 –16

This popular programme introduces parents to how their children are taught in the literacy hour and/or daily maths lesson

Delivered either by a designated teacher from the school or a Family Learning Tutor
Family Literacy (30 hrs)
Suitable for parents with children aged 5 – 16

This programme is delivered by a designated member of staff from the school and a Family Learning Tutor

Parents work with the Family Learning Tutor on their skills for part of the session whilst their children work in a small group with the designated teacher

Parents, children tutor and teacher have the opportunity to work together
Family Numeracy (30 hrs)
Suitable for parents with children aged 5 – 16

This programme is delivered by a designated member of staff from the school and a Family Learning Tutor

Parents work with the Family Learning Tutor on their skills for part of the session whilst their children work in a small group with the designated teacher

Parents, children, tutor and teacher have the opportunity to work together
Early Start (30 hrs)
Suitable for parents with children aged 0 – 3

This programme is delivered by designated staff from the setting and a Family Learning tutor

Early Start helps parents explore ways of playing and talking with and listening to their children

In 2004 – 2005 Early Start has been delivered successfully in four Children's Centres
Playing with Language (30 hrs)
Suitable for parents with children aged 3 – 5

This programme is delivered by a designated member of staff from the setting and a Family Learning tutor

Playing with Language provides opportunities for families to develop their communication, language and literacy skills at home, in nursery or school

This programme has been successfully trialled in 2004 –2005 and is suitable for schools and Children's Centres
Introduction to ICT in schools (9 –13 hrs)
Suitable for parents with children aged 5 – 16

A 9 – 13 hour programme delivered by a Family Learning Tutor

The purpose of this programme is to improve the ICT skills of the parents and demonstrate how ICT is used in schools
