Information, advice and guidance


If you:

our trained advisors can help you decide the right path to take. We have a wealth of knowledge about local and national learning opportunities and progression routes into employment and volunteering.

We also have a comprehensive directory which lists local organisations that can assist you with your needs. We also have a progression leaflet that will provide you with information on what you can do next with Learning and Skills at Gateshead Council.

Our aims and objectives

Learning and Skills aim to:

  • Provide all learners and potential learners with accurate and up to date information and advice that enables them to make informed choices about learning and work 
  • Actively promote high quality information, advice and guidance
  • Be impartial and signpost people to the most relevant and appropriate source of information, advice or guidance
  • Listen to what users of our service say about our service and continually improve our offer

To achieve these aims our objectives are that all learners and potential learners:

  • Receive clear, accurate, up to date, accessible, objective and impartial information before committing to a course
  • Receive requested information and advice within seven working days of asking
  • Can talk to someone or access appropriate information to enable them to discuss how a proposed learning activity meets their needs
  • Can be confident that staff have been appropriately trained and developed to deliver the highest standards of IAG
  • Can access information and advice about financial support and other support to help them when they are on the course
  • Can access clear, accurate, up-to-date, accessible, objective and impartial information, advice or guidance about progression opportunities beyond the learning route they are undertaking
  • Can be confident that their personal information is held securely
  • Can be signposted or referred onto specialist or alternative help
  • Are provided with ways in which to give feed back on the IAG service they have received
  • Receive a timely response to compliments complaints and comments within seven working days
  • Are provided with information about how Learning and Skills has used their feedback to improve the IAG service
