Elections and Voting

The last local elections for councillors in Gateshead took place on Thursday 1 May 2008. You can view the results for this election in our results pages|

There are around 149,000 registered electors who are eligible to vote at this year's elections. So far over 39,000 electors have opted to vote by post.

Anyone on the register can have a postal vote if they wish, so If you don't want to be one of the 110,000 people who need to attend a polling station to be able to vote ask for a postal vote now.

For those electors who prefer the traditional approach of placing their vote in the ballot box they will be able to do so.

Whickham South and Sunniside By-Election 31st July 2008

Due to the sad death of Councillor Alan Ord a by-election will be held in Whickham South and Sunniside Ward on the 31st July 2008.

Nominations for the Whickham South and Sunniside by-election closed at noon on the 4th of July, three candidates are standing.

  • Elaine Dobson - LABOUR,
  • John McClurey - LIBERAL DEMOCRAT
  • John Robertson - CONSERVATIVE


Polling stations will open at 7.00am and close at 10.00pm

Key dates

7 July            

All registered voters will receive a poll card giving details of where their polling station is.
All registered postal voters will receive a postal poll card confirming their postal vote and when to expect their postal vote pack to be delivered.

16 July

Deadline for applications to be added to the register for this year's Election.
5.00pm deadline for application to apply for or cancel a postal vote or postal proxy.

From
21  July
Postal voter packs will be sent to all registered postal voters.
23 July Last day to apply for a Proxy Vote or to cancel an existing Proxy Vote.
28 July First day to apply for a replacement for a lost or spoilt postal ballot paper.
29 July Last possible day to post your postal vote back so that it can be counted.
31 July

Polling stations open at 7.00 am and close at 10.00pm.
