The election agent is the person responsible in law for the candidate's election campaign:
-
In particular the financial management of the campaign and for ensuring that the declarations and returns of election expenses are properly completed;
-
Candidates should understand that their election could be brought into question if the election agent does not perform their duties promptly and correctly.
Who can be an election agent?
Every candidate must have an election agent. There are no particular qualifications for an election agent and candidates can act as their own Agents.
-
Candidates must take care in appointing an election agent as they will be liable for any unauthorised activities performed by the agent;
-
This year candidates must declare the name and both home and office address of their election agent in writing to the Returning Officer by 12 noon on Wednesday 9 April 2008.
Further information can be obtained in the "Guidance for Candidates and Agents" booklet produced by the Electoral Commission.
A copy of this booklet is provided in the nomination pack from the electoral services team. Alternatively a copy can be downloaded from the Electoral Commission website|.
