General Election 2017


The General Election will take place on Thursday, 8 June 2017

  • Register to vote by 22 May 2017
  • Polling stations open at 7am and close at 10pm prompt

Gateshead constituencies

Gateshead is divided between three constituencies:

  • Gateshead
  • Blaydon
  • Jarrow

Each is represented by one MP.

Am I registered to vote?

Polling cards will be sent out with details of where and when to vote. They should start arriving from 9 May 2017.

If you do not receive a polling card, contact the Electoral Registration Office.

If you were registered to vote in last year’s local elections or in the European Referendum, you should still be registered to vote.

If you have recently changed your address, notify the Electoral Registration Office to receive your vote.

If you are not registered to vote, you have until 22 May 2017 to register.

Can I vote by post?

If you would like to vote by post, you can apply for a postal ballot.

We will need to receive your request form by 5pm, 23 May 2017. 

Postal ballot packs will be released in two waves.

  • Register for a postal ballot by 27 April 2017, you will receive your ballot pack from Tuesday 23 May 2017.
  • Register for a postal ballot after 27 April 2017 but before the 23 May 2017 deadline, you will receive your ballot pack after 31 May 2017.

Can I vote by proxy?

A proxy vote means you can nominate someone to vote on your behalf if you can’t get to a polling station.

You have until 31 May 2017 to apply vote by proxy.
