Joe McElderry, X Factor Finalist, performed live at The Sage Gateshead |as part of a series of ‘homecoming’ events in advance of the X Factor Final of 2009.

Joe was welcomed on stage by his mentor Cheryl Cole in front of hundreds of fans chanting ‘Vote Joe!’ He performed three songs including the balled ‘Don’t Stop Believing,’ and thanked local fans for their loyal support during the X Factor live shows.

The event took place on the concourse of The Sage Gateshead with ‘X Factor’ logos projected across the walls of the venue and search lights adding to the unique atmosphere of the evening. The River Tyne at night provided the perfect back-drop to the singing local celebrity.

Joe, from South Shields, was hailed the ‘Angel of the North’ by local dignitaries who greeted him onstage. Those attending the event included the Deputy Mayor of Gateshead, Pauline Dillon, and the Mayor of South Tyneside.

The exciting evening was organised at short-notice only after Joe’s place in the X Factor Final was confirmed on Sunday night. There was heavy press coverage with two TV crews, three radio stations and three newspaper journalists in attendance. The filming from the evening will be used on ITV1 X Factor shows.

The Sage Gateshead was chosen as the iconic venue for this homecoming event just weeks before the venue celebrates its fifth anniversary.
