Gateshead residents have revealed just what Angels mean in their lives through an exciting new art installation at Gateshead Civic Centre.
As part of Gateshead Council’s Angel of the North 10th anniversary celebrations 200 people have revealed how Angels shine on their lives.

The ‘Who is Your Angel?’ installation designed by local artists Jane Gower and Tony Scandrett features striking black and white images and sounds of people from across Gateshead describing their feelings on Angels.

The faces of Gateshead people are interspersed with images of the Angel of the North. ‘Who is Your Angel?’ is located in the main entrance to Gateshead Civic Centre. The installation is due to remain on exhibition for two months.

Gateshead Council cabinet member for culture Cllr David Napier said: “One of the main reasons that the Angel of the North has been such a success is because the people of Gateshead have taken it to heart. This art work celebrates not only Gateshead’s sculptural Angel but also the role of human Angel’s who have made a difference to peoples lives.”

The images and sound recordings were taken during several open sessions in Gateshead where members of the public were encouraged to come along and reveal what Angels mean to them.

Artist Jane Gower said: “The response from the people who we interviewed has been amazing, their answers thought-provoking, funny and insightful. Hopefully the installation will capture that passing glance into the thoughts and feelings from this diverse range of people- a sort of audio and visual snapshot portrait of Gateshead lives.”

The real Angel of the North is seen by 90,000 people every day in its prominent position over looking the main routes into Gateshead.
