Tenth athletics festival for Gateshead

Date: 25/06/2008

The tenth Gateshead Primary Schools Athletics Festival is set to be the best yet as hundreds of young athletes gear up to take part.
Over 1,000 children from 45 primary schools across Gateshead will take part in the event, which is being held at Gateshead International Stadium on Friday 27th June between 9.30am and 4.00pm.

The festival will feature dozens of traditional track and field events, as well as interesting variations such as speed skipping and spring jump races.

Deputy Mayor of Gateshead, Councillor Joe Mitchinson, will open the event.

Councillor Catherine Donovan, Cabinet member for children and young people at Gateshead Council said:

“Athletics is a great form of exercise. And this festival is one of many events that Gateshead Council is holding - in partnership - for young children to enhance their sporting experiences.

“As well as providing a great day out for Gateshead youngsters to come together and have fun, the event will hopefully help to instill a love for sport and physical activity, which will stay with them throughout their lives.”
