This month’s switch-on of Gateshead’s Christmas lights will prove to be an extra-special occasion for one Gateshead youngster.

Robyn Elsender, a pupil at Whitemere Primary School in Wardley, has been chosen to assist the Mayor of Gateshead with the official switch-on outside of Gateshead Civic Centre after her design for a Christmas light was declared the winner in a Gateshead-wide competition.

Her position right by the Mayor, Councillor Malcolm Brain will ensure that she is in prime position to see the Christmas light she personally designed springing to life for the first time!

Robyn’s design was one of hundreds of entries considered by judges in an annual competition to design a Christmas decoration for Gateshead town centre. The judges decided that Robyn’s design - which features a snowman with a hat and scarf - was the most attractive and it is now being turned into a full-sized Christmas illumination so it can be incorporated into Gateshead town centre’s Christmas lights.

Robyn’s win also means her school will now receive a prize of £250to put towards a future visit to a cultural venue or to help pay for a workshop with an artist.

Now, Robyn and her classmates are getting ready to visit Gateshead Civic Centre on Friday 23 November 2012 as guests of the Mayor and to perform Christmas carols in the main foyer of Gateshead Civic Centre immediately before the switch-on.

Members of the public are welcome to attend.
